What Will Tougher U.S. Sanctions Mean for Cuba?

James P. McGovern, member of the U.S. House of Representatives (D-Mass.): “I strongly object to President Trump’s new executive order on Cuba. It doubles down on an outdated approach that repeatedly fails to achieve its aims. Rather, the U.S. embargo proves harmful to the people of Cuba. It denies them food, medicine and basic goods. It contributes to hunger and human misery. It is a driver of migration from the island. The Cuban government must make major changes to help meet the Cuban people’s aspirations. It denies them fundamental human rights. It does not meet their basic needs. It must listen to what people are asking for and address their concerns in a real way. But the U.S. government isn’t helping. In fact, we’re making the lives of the Cuban people worse.
