Duane Bratt, professor of political science at Mount Royal University: “Canadian and American officials have stated that they are negotiating a new bilateral economic and security deal. In one sense, this is not a surprise. There are thousands of bilateral agreements between the two countries in existence, and they are continuing to be updated. Canada is also not afraid of major agreements, such as the original Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement in the 1980s and the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) in the 1950s. However, in the current context, it will be difficult to achieve a significant new deal. On the economic side, CUSMA (or USMCA) is up for review in 2026. But this is in the midst of the most serious trade war…”
