What Can Nations Do to Better Fight Deforestation?

  • Forest loss hit a record high in 2024 due to fires fueled by climate change, according to a recent report by the World Resources Institute and the University of Maryland. Latin America suffered the most deforestation of any global region last year, according to the report, as the Amazon biome hit its highest level of primary forest loss since 2016. The report comes ahead of Brazil’s plans to host the COP30 climate change summit in Belém later this year. How well is the administration of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva addressing climate-change-driven fires in the Amazon, and what more can it do to tackle this issue? How does the Brazilian government’s record on deforestation affect the country’s credibility and leadership in global climate negotiations. How are the ecological consequences of forest loss in tropical areas different from the loss of greenery in boreal zones like Canada and Russia?
