How Well Is Brazil Regulating Online Betting Games?

  • Brazil’s Senate is currently investigating the growing influence of online betting games and their potential relationship with organized crime groups involved in money laundering. The probe follows new regulations that took effect in January that include licensing, limits on advertising and measures to guard against gambling addiction in Brazil, which is among the world’s largest markets for sports betting. To what extent are mobile payment methods facilitating online betting, and what role do fintechs play in this discussion? How well are the regulations that took effect earlier this year working? What should the government do to tackle the problem of gambling addiction while still preserving financial inclusivity via online payment methods?
