Eduardo Ruiz, analyst at Control Risks in Bogotá: “Andrónico Rodríguez, president of Bolivia’s Senate, has emerged as a leading contender in the run-up to the presidential election on Aug. 17. With President Luis Arce withdrawing to avoid splitting the ruling party and Evo Morales disqualified by the constitutional court, Rodríguez stands as the main candidate of the ruling party’s left-leaning factions. His Indigenous heritage and political base in the Chapare region position him to secure significant support from Bolivia’s Indigenous and progressive electorate.
