How Will a Healthy School Meals Rule Change Mexico?

  • A federal rule banning unhealthy snacks and sugary drinks from Mexican public schools, an early initiative of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration, took effect on March 29. The rule also mandates that public schools supply safe drinking water to all students. Mexico’s obesity rate ranks behind only that of the United States and Chile among large countries in the Western Hemisphere, according to data from the World Health Organization. How feasible is Sheinbaum’s healthy school meals policy, and what effects might it have on Mexicans’ health? How might the policy affect Mexico’s economy? To what extent are similar health policies likely to be enacted elsewhere in the region?

From a nutritional epidemiology perspective, healthier food environments—particularly in schools—are essential to enable better dietary choices and to prevent obesity and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) from early life. Childhood is a critical stage where lifelong dietary habits are formed, and intervening early is key to reducing the long-term burden of NCDs. Creating food environments that make the healthy choice the easy, default choice is fundamental. Schools should be spaces where children are supported in developing healthy eating habits—this includes removing…”
