What Will Jair Bolsonaro’s Trial Mean for Brazil?

Rodrigues, associate professor in International Relations at the Federal University of ABC and researcher at the National Council on Scientific and Technological Research-CNPq: “The complaint filed by the Attorney General against former President Bolsonaro and seven other former members of his government is a robust document with compelling evidence of Bolsonaro’s involvement in the preparation and attempted coup d’état to prevent the inauguration of President Lula and Vice President Alckmin. These are extremely serious crimes attributed to the former president, which jeopardize his continued presence in the electoral scene. By accepting the complaint and making Bolsonaro a defendant, the Supreme Federal Court partially seals the fate of the former president in Brazil’s political landscape. Already ineligible by decision of the Superior Electoral Court, Bolsonaro must now defend himself to avoid imprisonment during the trial and to escape conviction—both of which are highly likely outcomes. Politically, Bolsonaro is seeking support for a preemptive amnesty that would benefit him, but this is highly unlikely, as it legally depends on…”
