Will a Strengthened Agency Help Find Mexico’s Missing?

Vanda Felbab-Brown, senior fellow for foreign policy at the Brookings Institution: “The public outcry over the Teuchitlán horrors stimulated President Claudia Sheinbaum to launch a reinvigorated campaign to address disappearances in Mexico, which number more than 120,000. Her six-point plan includes: 1.) strengthening the National Search Commission, one of many institutions gutted by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador; 2.) consolidating a national identity number to facilitate investigations; 3.) legally enabling immediate official searches without the need to wait 72 hours; 4.) increasing criminal penalties to imprisonments of 20-80 years; 5) publishing monthly statistics; and 6) enhancing support for victims’ families.
