While the agreement has yet to be officially approved by the institution’s board, Economy Minister Luis Caputo has indicated that the credit would consist of $20 billion, plus a new package from the World Bank, IDB, and CAF that is currently being negotiated. A significant portion of the disbursement is expected to be used to roll over debt maturities with the IMF itself. The remaining funds would be used to strengthen the central bank’s foreign reserves and to clean up its balance sheet. With this loan, the government aims to prevent volatility in the foreign exchange market that could disrupt its inflation reduction efforts—the administration’s most notable achievement to date and a key pillar of its political support.
