Will Colombian Voters Advance Petro’s Reforms?

Gimena Sánchez-Garzoli, director for the Andes at the Washington Office on Latin America:“The Colombian Congress has not advanced President Petro’s labor and health reforms because the government coalition lacked the necessary majority, requiring complex negotiations. There is resistance to the reforms for various reasons. The majority parties in Congress have strong ties to the previous model, prioritizing private-sector health care and fewer labor rights for Colombian workers. The reforms would lead to more public regulations. Others wish to sink Petro’s efforts to gain a political advantage. Despite the protests on Tuesday, Colombia’s Senate denied the opportunity for the labor reform proposal to have a plenary debate. The reforms aim to harmonize Colombia’s labor laws to align with internationally accepted standards, including limiting temporary contracts for long-term positions.
