There is resistance to the reforms for various reasons. The majority parties in Congress have strong ties to the previous model, prioritizing private-sector health care and fewer labor rights for Colombian workers. The reforms would lead to more public regulations. Others wish to sink Petro’s efforts to gain a political advantage. Despite the protests on Tuesday, Colombia’s Senate denied the opportunity for the labor reform proposal to have a plenary debate. The reforms aim to harmonize Colombia’s labor laws to align with internationally accepted standards, including limiting temporary contracts for long-term positions.
