Will a Brazil-U.S. Partnership Hinder Trafficking?

  • Rio de Janeiro’s State Security Department and the U.S. Consulate General in Rio are in talks to establish a partnership to fight international drug and arms trafficking, Veja magazine reported. The U.S. government wants to exchange information to prevent drugs from arriving in the United States, Rio de Janeiro state’s security secretary, Victor Santos, told the magazine. A “big part” of weapons apprehended in Rio is of U.S. origin, Santos said. To what extent can this collaboration prevent drug and weapons trafficking between the United States and Brazil? How will this partnership address the root causes of drug and weapons trafficking between both nations? If successful, how could this project serve as a model to prevent drug and weapons trafficking between other Latin American countries and the United States?

However, the effectiveness of this partnership will depend on its ability to deal with the complexity of trafficking, which involves transnational networks, corruption and socioeconomic inequalities. This cooperation can hinder trafficking routes, track weapons and dismantle criminal organizations.
