Gedan, director of the Latin America Program at the Woodrow Wilson Center: “Argentina’s democracy has been remarkably resilient in the four decades since the Falklands War led to the fall of the country’s last military dictatorship. Its economy is famously turbulent, and over two weeks in late 2001 and early 2002, Argentina cycled through five presidents. Even so, the country has maintained civilian control of the armed forces, a free and lively news media and highly mobilized civil society institutions. In that context, these recess appointments are not a threat to Argentina’s political system. The supreme court appointments are only valid until November and would require support from two-thirds of the Senate to become permanent. That would involve complex negotiations with President Javier Milei’s moderate allies in the PRO and Radical parties and also with members of the Peronist opposition.
