Nevertheless, it is ironic that President Donald Trump won the presidential election precisely by promising to curb migration flows. This is a complex issue, as migrants are needed for the U.S. economy, although it is a polarizing political issue. Several variables explain the decline in migrant encounters: first, more security forces at both the southern U.S. and Mexican border; second, strong signals sent by the U.S. government that unauthorized crossings were not going to be tolerated; and third, mobile applications, but forwarded by the U.S. authorities to make appointments.
