What Would Better Infrastructure Mean for Guatemala?

  • Guatemala and the United States are working together on infrastructure development initiatives in the Central American country, with projects that include ground, rail, sea and air infrastructure, Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo said Feb. 5 during a visit by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. During the visit, Rubio signed a letter pledging U.S. support for the expansion of two port facilities and other infrastructure in Guatemala so that the country ‘can become an economic hub of trade and commerce.’ How important is the port and other infrastructure development to Guatemala and its economy? What challenges do these projects face? How does this bilateral cooperation fit into the Trump administration’s foreign policy, and to what extent might it lead to lower levels of migration to the United States?
