Juan Cruz Diaz, managing director, and Santiago Ott, senior analyst, both at Cefeidas Group in Buenos Aires: “President Milei’s decision to withdraw Argentina from the WHO is arguably one of his most radical foreign policy moves. However, it did not emerge in a vacuum. Even before entering politics, Milei was a vocal critic of the Covid-19 pandemic response, denouncing the WHO and global governments in his book Pandenomics. Similarly, the ideological framework of the so-called ‘new right’—a movement in which Milei seeks to establish himself as a leading voice—embraces a firm rejection of international organizations, which are perceived as agents of a ‘globalist’ agenda that erodes national sovereignty. During the Biden administration, Milei’s ambition to lead the global ‘new right’ often clashed with his policy of unwavering alignment with the United States, as Democrats controlled the White House.
