Will Mexico’s Gun Buyback Program Reduce Violence?

Unfortunately, Mexico still has high levels of violence, as homicide data and tensions with the United States have shown. Nevertheless, what may be more important than this campaign is the government’s current strategy to fight crime. Arms ownership is not ubiquitous in Mexico, as there are strict laws on gun ownership. The fundamental problem of gun violence derives from criminal organizations, which obtain the vast bulk of their arms from the United States. According to various sources, around 90 percent of confiscated weapons in the country come from the United States. It is no surprise that President Sheinbaum brought up the issue when she last spoke with President Trump. There is a notable change in Mexico’s security strategy.
