Will El Salvador Soon Lift its State of Emergency?

Christine Wade, professor of political science and international studies at Washington College in Chestertown, Md.: “El Salvador’s state of emergency, which has now been in effect for two and a half years, has become the rule rather than the exception. There’s little political incentive for Bukele to end it. It’s been overwhelmingly popular with Salvadorans, who granted him an unconstitutional second consecutive term. It’s garnered him a great deal of international attention, including a Time magazine cover story, and there have been no serious consequences for Bukele beyond the rebuke from the press and human rights organizations, which he doesn’t respect anyway. Its chief drawback for Bukele is its expense, which, given El Salvador’s public debt, makes it unsustainable. It’s a conundrum for Bukele. If, as he says, gangs have been dismantled under the state of emergency…”
