What Is the State of Relations Between Haiti and the DR?

Authorities in the Dominican Republic are sending hundreds of Haitians back to their country each day, The Wall Street Journal reported last month, citing government data. Nearly 225,000 Haitians were deported or expelled last year from the Dominican Republic, which is speeding up the construction of a wall along the countries’ shared border. The developments come as gang violence has exploded in Haiti over the past several weeks. How well is the Dominican Republic handling migration from Haiti, and how much responsibility does the Dominican Republic have to accept Haitian refugees? What is the state of relations and cross-border commerce between the two countries? Manuel Orozco, director of the Migration, Remittances & Development Program at the Inter-American Dialogue: “The Dominican Republic has been asking for regional collaboration pertaining to the Haitian crisis, and it intensified its request for help after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. The Dominican Republic’s government has complained that the international community is giving more support to Venezuelans who are arriving in the Dominican Republic than to Haitians who are arriving there. Historically, the Dominican Republic has been a reluctant host, and the Haitian migrants who have crossed the porous border are largely undocumented.
