How Important Are Colombia & Israel to Each Other?

  • Israel announced on Oct. 15 that it would be halting security exports to Colombia after Colombian President Gustavo Petro compared Israel’s latest strategy in Gaza to the tactics of Nazi Germany. Aside from providing its government with war planes and machine guns, Israel has been an important trading partner for Colombia, as the countries signed a free trade agreement in 2020. How important are Israeli security exports to Colombia, and how close of a relationship do the two countries have? What are the main reasons behind the diplomatic tension between the two countries? What kind of impact, both economically and politically, could a less friendly relationship with Israel have on Colombia?

Defense and security cooperation between Bogotá and Tel Aviv is essential, but let’s not forget there is also a human component: Colombia participates in the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO), a peacekeeping organization that monitors the peace between Israel and Egypt. I know Colombian military officers who participated in the MFO and have good memories of this mission, and they do not want to see bilateral relations suffer. As for defense and security cooperation, Colombia has several military technology providers and a robust domestic defense industry, but Israel is a strategic partner, particularly…”
