Nor was much said about U.S.-Latin American relations—not surprising since no one in Washington seems to be giving serious consideration to hemispheric cooperation. Attention to Latin America today is overwhelmingly directed to problems the region is causing the United States—the expansion of Chinese presence and influence, the swelling numbers of undocumented migrants at the border and the murderous flow of fentanyl-laced drugs. China, migration and drug cartels all represent challenges for Latin America as well, but so far, North-South collaboration has not achieved much on any of these issues.
