What Will New Economic Measures Mean for Argentina?

Todd Martinez, senior director and co-head of the Americas for sovereigns at Fitch Ratings: “Argentina’s deal with the IMF should give it access to the funds needed to pay off its prior program, averting risks of default to the institution or a further drawdown of depleted international reserves that would have greatly aggravated the economy’s woes. But the good news ends there. The deal does not include new funding. It green-lights some ‘muddle-through’ measures that compound, rather than fix, underlying problems. The higher exchange rate for exports and taxes on imports amounts to a partial devaluation that could help foreign exchange flows, but it will do so with an inflationary and recessionary effect, without anchoring confidence and expectations, and by damaging relations with trade partners.
