Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University and former British ambassador to Cuba: “Díaz-Canel has provided the continuity the Castros wanted and has not yet developed an agenda that challenges their legacy. His first term covered the pandemic, which led to the collapse of tourism and dire economic conditions for Cubans through inflation along with drastic cutbacks in imports that Cuba was forced to make. Hundreds of thousands of Cubans have left the country in the last two years—an estimated 2 percent of the population. Díaz-Canel has survived and has generally used the Castro playbook to explain Cuba’s predicament and why the protests of 2021 erupted.
