Julio Burdman, professor of geopolitics at the University of Buenos Aires: “Argentines who emigrate to Europe and the United States are not a massive phenomenon, but they are a symbolically significant one, because it hurts national pride. Argentina has always felt like a country that receives immigrants, like the United States or Australia, and now to see that the flow has reversed is painful. Argentine emigrants are probably different from other Latin American emigrants. First of all, they are not that poor. Forty percent of the adults who emigrate are university graduates, and most of them belong—socially or culturally—to the middle class. The main ‘colonies’ of the ‘Argentine diaspora’ are Miami, Madrid and Barcelona. There is also another social phenomenon: many of these emigrants are descendants of former European immigrants, mainly from Italy and Spain, and obtained European passports through ‘dual citizenship’ procedures.
