What Do Colombia and NATO Get From Each Other?

Sergio Guzmán, co-founder and director of Colombia Risk Analysis: “As a NATO global partner, Colombia is looking for additional deterrents to any aggression from Venezuela. We’ve seen in the past that Venezuela’s close relationship with Russia is viewed with skepticism in Colombia and other parts of Latin America, and particularly in the United States. One of the things that Colombia wants is to reinforce its ability to call on allies, considering that it’s one of the few countries that is overpowered in the air. Venezuela has air power superiority over Colombia, so in order to counter that, Colombia is also closely allied with the United States as a NATO global partner, looking for ways in which it can contribute to its defense apparatus without necessarily having to increase military spending. It’s long been rumored that Colombia needs to replace its fleet of fighter jets—the Kfir fighter jets—which will go out of commission in 2023…”
