Mónica Rojas, professor and dean of economics at Universidad San Francisco de Quito: “Before President Noboa took office, there was apparent tension between him and Abad. Noboa first transferred her to Israel as an ambassador and, in recent weeks, transferred her to Turkey. These assignments indicate he did not want her nearby. In another effort to motivate a possible resignation on her part, her son was charged with corruption and imprisoned. The latest in the saga was that the government suspended her activities as vice president for 150 days without pay. Without regard to whether the suspension was legal, the sanction seems extreme, and she is suspended until just before the second round of the presidential election in April.
