What’s Behind the Suspension of Ecuador’s VP?

Ecuador’s government on Nov. 9 suspended Vice President Verónica Abad for five months over her alleged refusal to quickly adhere to an order for her transfer from Israel, where she also serves as Ecuador’s ambassador, to Turkey. Days later, President Daniel Noboa tapped Planning Minister Sariha Moya to fill in as vice president. The suspension bars Abad from performing duties until just before the second round of Ecuador’s presidential election in April. What’s behind Abad’s suspension, and what does it mean for Ecuadorean political dynamics leading up to the first round of the presidential election in February? Noboa first transferred her to Israel as an ambassador and, in recent weeks, transferred her to Turkey. These assignments indicate he did not want her nearby. In another effort to motivate a possible resignation on her part, her son was charged with corruption and imprisoned. The latest in the saga was that the government suspended her activities as vice president for 150 days without pay. Without regard to whether the suspension was legal, the sanction seems extreme, and she is suspended until just before the second round of the presidential election in April.
