What’s Holding Back Digital Payments Growth in Mexico?

  • Bottling and retail group Femsa, which operates Oxxo convenience stores and gas stations in Mexico, announced on May 14 that its payments unit, NetPay, was launching a new system for digital payments at gas stations. The announcement came after Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said in March that she wanted gas stations to move toward digital payments. How much will Femsa’s move lead to greater adoption of digital payments at gas stations and other businesses in Mexico? What factors stand in the way of more consumers in Mexico switching from the use of cash to digital payments?
