Karim Lesina, executive vice president and chief external affairs officer at Millicom: “Latin America has emerged as one of the most dynamic regions for fintech, driven by structural gaps in traditional financial services and rapid digital adoption. Roughly half of adults in the region remain unbanked or underbanked, yet smartphone penetration is high, creating fertile ground for mobile-first solutions. Venture capital flows into fintech have grown steadily, with investors drawn to scalable models that can leapfrog legacy infrastructure and reach underserved populations. Fintech companies are playing a meaningful role in bringing new users into the formal financial system. Digital wallets, for example, have become entry points for millions of people who previously lacked a bank account, enabling them to receive remittances, make digital payments and build transaction histories.
