Carlos Boj de León, regional energy and finance consultant: “The completion of utility-scale LNG facilities in Guatemala could mark a turning point in the country’s energy resilience and economic competitiveness. Through the PEG-5 auction—Guatemala’s most ambitious procurement to date—the government seeks to contract 1,400 megawatts of new capacity, including at least 700 megawatts of LNG-based firm power. Guatemala’s current energy mix relies heavily on hydropower and renewables. However, recurring climate change effects have undermined reliability and exposed system vulnerabilities. LNG offers year-round dispatchability with lower emissions than fuel oil or coal, as well as operational flexibility to complement…”
