Can Honduras Secure Major Investments in the Power Sector?

Flores, commissioner-secretary of the Electric Energy Regulatory Commission of Honduras (CREE): “The auction of up to 1.5 GW announced by ENEE represents an important step toward modernizing the Honduran electricity system. The country has great potential to diversify its energy matrix through renewable sources—such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric—and this call sends a positive signal to the market: Honduras is open to strategic alliances and private capital to close its capacity gap. Although challenges remain, the framework approved by the Electric Energy Regulatory Commission (CREE) provides a solid technical foundation that offers confidence and predictability. While this is the first time Honduras has implemented a reverse auction on this scale, the mechanism’s design—successfully tested in other countries—represents an opportunity…”
