In the 2010s, Chinese activities in the sector expanded, with 10 to 20 foreign direct investment deals announced annually until 2020. From 2015 onward, Chinese investment gradually moved to renewables (hydro, solar and wind) while maintaining a presence in traditional energy. While mergers and acquisitions dominated capital-intensive projects like hydrocarbons and hydropower, renewables have often relied on greenfield investments. Key players included state-owned giants such as Three Gorges and State Grid, alongside industrial champions…”
