How Will Smart Metering Change Electricity Usage?

Pedro Niembro, senior director at Monarch Global Strategies: “Smart metering holds significant promise for both utility companies and consumers in Latin America. Its potential benefits were astutely identified by the Mexican government, with analysis and implementation strategies discussed at the Energy Ministry (SENER) and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) in the early 2000s. With this head start, Mexico has already deployed more than eight million smart meters (out of close to 48 million customers), with many millions more to come. For CFE and other regional utilities, smart meters provide real-time data on energy consumption, which enables more efficient management of the grid, reduces technical and non-technical losses and contributes to sustainability by both reducing energy waste and…”
