Over the years, the country has adopted public polices with the objective of promoting the development of renewable energies and protecting large areas of rain forest, mangroves and ocean. In fact, renewables account for 55 percent of the electricity generation of the country, and the National System of Protected Areas (SINAP) guards 30 percent of its oceans and forests. The World Bank loan will strengthen the ability of Panama to protect its carbon neutral status. The loan is designed around two pillars: 1.) support reforms to implement energy transition and socially inclusive low-carbon growth; 2.) establish policy foundations to sustain natural capital for resilient growth.
